Under Brazil’s visionary G20 Presidency, the world has taken a historic step toward putting nature on the balance sheet. As Brazil prepares to host the implementation focused COP 30, its leadership is proving that valuing nature is not a moral appeal but a fiduciary financial transformation — one capable of reshaping markets, strengthening fiscal stability, and restoring planetary resilience.

The $80 trillion global cost of inaction on nature between 2000 and 2050 is not merely an environmental statistic — it is a systemic financial risk to portfolios, credit ratings, and national balance sheets. Recognising nature within the world’s financial architecture is therefore not optional; it is the next frontier of risk management, market integrity, and long-term value creation. “Markets cannot price what accounting fails to define”.

This framework extends Brazil’s leadership. Supported by this Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) Lighthouse Report, it operationalises the principles of the G20 Nature Investment Roadmap, Roadmap 2.0, and Nature in the Portfolio reports — demonstrating how existing IFRS standards, notably IAS 37 and IAS 38, can be applied today to recognise Nature as a productive, auditable, and investable asset class.
